Reasoning about controllable and uncontrollable variables

چکیده
We consider the extension of non-monotonic preference logic with the distinction between controllable (or endogenous) and uncontrollable (or exogenous) variables, which can be used for example in agent decision making and deliberation. We assume that the agent is optimistic about its own controllables and pessimistic about its uncontrollables, and we study ways to merge these two distinct dimensions. We consider also complex preferences, such as optimistic preferences conditional on an uncontrollable, or optimistic preferences conditional on a pessimistic preference.

Counterfactual Reasoning for Regretted Situations Involving Controllable Versus Uncontrollable Events: The Modulating Role of Contingent Self-Esteem
We report a study that examined the modulating impact of contingent self-esteem on regret intensity for regretted outcomes associated with controllable versus uncontrollable events. The Contingent Self-Esteem Scale (e.g., Kernis & Goldman, 2006) was used to assess the extent to which a person's sense of self-worth is based on self and others' expectations. We found that there was an influence o...
متن کاملIntelligent Quality Controllers for On-Line Parameter Design
Parameter design methods, in general, do not take into account the common occurrence that some of the uncontrollable factors are observable for products and processes, during operation and production, respectively. This paper introduces a methodology that facilitates on-line parameter design for products and processes utilizing the extra information available about observable uncontrollable fac...
متن کاملOptimization of Biogas Production Process in a Wastewater Treatment Plant
Sludge is a byproduct of wastewater processing suitable for biogas production. The biogas consisting of about 60% methane can be used to generate electricity and heat. A data-driven approach for optimization of biogas production process in a wastewater treatment plant is presented. The process model is developed using routinely collected data categorized as controllable and uncontrollable varia...
متن کاملPermissions and Uncontrollable Propositions in DSDL3: Non-monotonicity and Algorithms
In this paper we are interested in non-monotonic extensions of Bengt Hansson’s standard dyadic deontic logic 3, known as DSDL3. We study specificity principles for DSDL3 with both controllable and uncontrollable propositions. We introduce an algorithm for minimal specificity which not only covers obligations but also permissions, and we discuss the distinction between weak and strong permission...
متن کاملArbitrating Between Theory-Theory and Simulation Theory: Evidence from a Think-Aloud Study of Counterfactual Reasoning
How we engage in mental state reasoning remains a contentious issue, reflected in the debate between theorytheorists, who argue that we deploy theory-based rules, and simulation theorists, who argue that such reasoning is subserved by simulation processes. The present study examined whether theory-based or simulation-based reasoning is adopted in regret-oriented counterfactual scenarios involvi...
